SIP inflows hit record Rs 32,490 cr in Sept as MF assets fall 5.1%
Mutual fund SIP contributions reached a record Rs 32,490 crore in September 2026, while industry assets fell 5.1% to Rs 82.64 lakh crore on market losses and debt fund outflows.
Monthly contributions through systematic investment plans (SIPs) in mutual funds rose to Rs 32,490 crore in September 2026, according to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) on 12 October. Press reports described the figure as a record high. In the same month, the industry's total assets under management (AUM) fell 5.1% to Rs 82.64 lakh crore. The two numbers measure different things: SIP contributions are new money entering each month, while AUM is the market value of everything the industry holds.
Why the two numbers diverge
SIP contributions rose 0.6% from Rs 32,297 crore in August and 10.7% from a year earlier. Active SIP accounts increased to 10.06 crore from 10.02 crore. The SIP asset base, however, fell 4.1% in the month to Rs 17.86 lakh crore, mainly because of mark-to-market losses. SIP assets were about 21.6% of industry AUM.
Total AUM fell from Rs 87.08 lakh crore at the end of August. AMFI attributes the decline to two causes: mark-to-market losses amid global risk-off sentiment, and net outflows from debt funds. Debt fund outflows totalled Rs 1,83,156 crore. Debt-oriented scheme assets fell 8.8% to Rs 17.64 lakh crore. AMFI says the outflows were driven mainly by withdrawals from liquid and money market funds, as investors raised cash for tax-related needs ahead of advance tax payment deadlines.
Net new money into the industry therefore did not offset the fall in value. Regular SIP money was a small part of the total, and the debt outflow alone was more than five times the month's SIP contributions.
Equity and passive funds
Equity funds recorded net inflows of Rs 38,307 crore, the 67th consecutive month of positive inflows, according to AMFI. Small-cap funds drew Rs 9,039 crore and mid-cap funds Rs 7,835 crore, according to press reports of the data. Passive funds received Rs 11,887 crore, led by equity and gold exchange-traded funds. The number of folios rose by 27.13 lakh to 28.62 crore, according to reporting on the release.
What this means for an investor
A SIP instalment buys units at the prevailing net asset value (NAV). A fall in NAV reduces the reported value of existing holdings but does not reduce the amount invested in that month. Whether an investor gains or loses depends on the price at which units are eventually redeemed, which is not known in advance.
The debt fund outflow is a separate point. Debt fund unit values also move with interest rates and market prices, and redemptions can force sales at prevailing prices. The Hindu reported that investors may favour short-term debt funds if rate expectations rise, because shorter-duration funds are generally less sensitive to interest rate changes. That is a press view, not an AMFI forecast.
What to watch
AMFI's chief executive, Venkat Chalasani, said that external headwinds, including volatile crude prices, inflation concerns, rising US Treasury yields and developments in West Asia, continue to weigh on sentiment. The next AMFI release will show whether SIP contributions keep rising while AUM recovers. That outcome depends on market prices, which are outside the scope of this data.
