Is SIP Safe? What Can Go Wrong With a Mutual Fund SIP, and What Can't

By BlinkMoney Editorial

Learn what a mutual fund SIP can and cannot protect you from, including market losses, platform failures, and ways to check your distributor and holdings.

Is SIP Safe? What Can Go Wrong With a Mutual Fund SIP, and What Can't

A SIP is a schedule for buying mutual fund units. It is not a savings account and it does not guarantee a return. Two different things can go wrong. Market risk is real: the value of your units can fall, and it can stay down for a long time. Platform risk is low when the fund sits inside the regulated structure and you use a registered distributor, because your units are recorded in your name with the fund house, not on the app's books.

Two risks people mix up

Market riskPlatform risk
What goes wrongThe fund's NAV falls, so your units are worth lessThe app or distributor fails, misreports your holdings, or sells you the wrong product
How likelyAlways present. Falls of more than a third have happened in IndiaLow where the distributor is registered and your units are in your folio
What limits itTime horizon, diversification, and not selling in a panicChecking the ARN, keeping your statement, and keeping your contact details current
Can it be removed? No. It is the cost of holding market-linked assetsLargely, by using registered intermediaries and checking your statements

Market risk: what a fall looks like

Between 14 January and 23 March 2020, the Nifty 50 fell from a closing level of 12,362.30 to 7,610.25. That is a fall of 38.4% on closing prices in about ten weeks. The index did not close above its January level again until 9 November 2020.

The Nifty is an index, not a mutual fund, so a fund's path will differ. The pattern is the useful part: the fall was fast, and the index took about ten months from its January high to get back above it.

A SIP does not avoid this fall. It changes what you pay for the units you buy. Take ₹10,000 invested on the first trading day of January, February and March 2020 (2 January, 3 February and 2 March). The index closed at 12,282.20, 11,707.90 and 11,132.75 on those days. Compare that with a ₹30,000 lump sum invested at the January closing high on 14 January.

Monthly SIP (₹10,000 × 3)Lump sum (₹30,000 on 14 January)
Average cost (index level)About 11,68912,362
Value on 23 March 2020₹19,532 (−34.9%)₹18,468 (−38.4%)
Value on 9 November 2020₹31,982 (+6.6%)₹30,240 (+0.8%)

This is rupee cost averaging. The SIP bought more units at lower levels, so its average cost was lower, and by 9 November it was further into profit than the lump sum. It did not stop the fall: on 23 March the SIP was still down 34.9% on paper. The benefit depends on continuing the instalments after prices drop. An investor who stopped in March would have bought fewer units at the lowest levels. SEBI's own FAQ makes the same point with ₹1,000 a month: when the NAV falls, the same amount buys more units.

The table uses index closes as a proxy for NAV. It ignores fund costs, taxes and exit loads, and one episode does not predict the next one. Also, the lump sum is the worst-timed case, invested at the high.

Platform risk: where your units actually sit

A mutual fund is set up as a trust. Trustees hold the fund's property for the benefit of unitholders, the AMC manages the money, and a SEBI-registered custodian holds the securities. Your app, distributor or website is an access point. It does not hold the fund's assets.

Your units sit in a folio with the fund house, and the registrars CAMS and KFintech keep the records. If an app shuts down:

  • The units stay in your name. Closing a platform does not cancel or transfer them.
  • You can see every folio. A Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) lists your holdings across all mutual funds. You can request it from CAMS or KFintech by mailback, to the email address registered on your folios, or log in to MF Central with your PAN and mobile number.
  • You can transact another way. Use another registered distributor, go to the fund house directly, or use MF Central.

Platform risk is still real in a few forms:

  • The SIP can stop quietly. When an app closes, the auto-debit may stop with it. Check that instalments are still being debited, and cancel any SIP you no longer want.
  • Your statements may not reach you. Out-of-date contact details on a folio mean missed statements and alerts.
  • The distributor may not be valid. A distributor can be unregistered, suspended or terminated.
  • Records may be wrong. Compare what an app shows with your CAS at least once a year.

How to check a distributor's ARN

Every mutual fund distributor needs an AMFI Registration Number (ARN). The ARN is linked to the holder's PAN and cannot be transferred.

  1. Ask for the ARN and the registered name. The name on the platform's statements should match.
  2. Search the ARN or name on AMFI's Locate a Mutual Fund Distributor page. Confirm the name matches and that the valid-till date is in the future.
  3. Check AMFI's lists of suspended and terminated ARNs.
  4. Check the entity on SEBI's intermediaries page.
  5. After you invest, compare your CAS with what the app shows.

An ARN check confirms that a distributor is registered. It says nothing about how a fund will perform.

With BlinkMoney, the distributor is Capline Ventures Private Limited, ARN-330047, valid from 29 May 2025 to 28 May 2028. Search that ARN on AMFI to confirm the same details. Capline describes itself as an AMFI-registered distributor and not an investment adviser. Distributors earn commission from the fund house. Regular plans carry a trail commission inside the expense ratio, so they cost slightly more than direct plans. The disclosure lists a 0.58% trail commission for the ICICI Prudential Multi-Asset Fund, the scheme currently distributed, and describes those figures as collated on a best-effort basis.

What this means for BlinkMoney Save

With BlinkMoney Save, you choose a daily amount starting at ₹21, and the investment runs automatically. The purchases are mutual fund units, so both risks above apply:

  • Market risk comes from the scheme. Read its scheme documents for holdings, risks and exit terms, and use them as the reference for the asset mix.
  • Platform risk is handled by the checks above. The fund house issues the units in your folio. The distributor does not hold them.
  • Daily instalments mean you buy more often. They do not change the market risk.
  • Historical returns describe the past. They are not a forecast of what Save will earn.

If you are looking for lower-risk options, the BlinkMoney guide to low-risk alternatives to stocks in India for 2026 covers them, so this article does not repeat them.

Risky signs

A daily SIP is not a warning sign on its own. A promise attached to it is.

  • Guaranteed, assured or fixed returns. The exchanges' joint caution says schemes offering assured or guaranteed returns in the securities market are prohibited by law.
  • Quick or daily profit promises. SEBI tells investors to be suspicious of anyone who guarantees near-certain returns, including quick daily returns.
  • Pressure to decide now. SEBI notes that no reputable professional should tell you to act immediately.
  • Requests for login details or "account handling". SEBI has warned that unregistered "account handlers" ask for trading credentials, run the account themselves, and take a share of the profits. Do not share credentials with anyone.
  • Payments to personal accounts, or apps downloaded from links. Use only official app stores and check registration first.
  • Tips and returns promoted on WhatsApp or Telegram. SEBI's scam guidance lists ads on these apps promising high returns as a common starting point.

If a platform or adviser is not on the AMFI or SEBI lists, do not invest through it.

Hinglish FAQ: kya SIP safe hai?

Kya SIP safe hai? SIP mutual fund mein regular investment karne ka tarika hai. Yeh koi guaranteed product nahi hai. Market risk hai, yaani fund ki NAV gir sakti hai. Platform risk kam hai, kyunki units aapke naam par fund house ke records mein hote hain.

Kya market girne par SIP ka paisa doob jata hai? Value kam ho sakti hai, aur kabhi kaafi samay tak kam rehti hai. 2020 mein Nifty 50 ne closing level par lagbhag 38% ki girawat dekhi, aur January ke level tak wapas aane mein lagbhag 10 mahine lage. Aisa dobara ho sakta hai, aur recovery kab hogi, iski koi guarantee nahi hai.

Rupee cost averaging se nuksan bachta hai? Nahi. Girne par SIP zyada units kharidti hai, isliye average cost kam hoti hai. Lekin fund ki value phir bhi gir sakti hai.

Agar app band ho jaye to mere paise kahan jayenge? Units aapke naam par fund house ke records mein rehte hain. CAS se apne saare folios dekhein, aur kisi registered distributor ke through ya seedhe fund house se transaction karein. Dhyan rahe, SIP ka auto-debit ruk sakta hai, isliye status check karein.

ARN kaise check karein? AMFI ke "Locate a Mutual Fund Distributor" page par ARN ya naam daal kar dekhein. Naam match karna chahiye, aur valid-till date aaj se aage honi chahiye.

Guaranteed return wali SIP safe hai? Nahi. Market-linked investment mein guaranteed return ka vaada red flag hai. SEBI aur exchanges dono ne isse lekar warn kiya hai.

Daily SIP safe hai ya nahi? Daily ya monthly, SIP ek schedule hai. Asli sawal yeh hai ki aap kis fund mein invest kar rahe hain, uska risk kitna hai, aur kya aap girawat mein bhi invest karte rah sakte hain.

Kya yeh investment advice hai? Nahi. Apni situation ke liye SEBI-registered investment adviser se baat karein.
